Happy Mother's Day

After some time of not posting anything on my blog, I am writing this short letter to all readers. I am sure you are all wondering what happened, why the blog suddenly became very quiet. It was due to my busy schedule and also because I had no inspiration for the time being to write. There was no subject that struck me as interesting.

Actually, I need to continue my biography, but I just want to write this short note to you first and I will continue my biography after this. Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre Singapore (KKBCS) just completed three days of Mani recitations and the event felt very good. There were many new and old members who joined in the event. According to the programme, on the first night, I gave teachings to the public regarding authentic Dharma Practice. The essence of this is to check on one’s own if there are any teachings or practice of Dharma which can be the remedy to overcome our defilements. Buddha’s entire teachings are antidotes to defilements. The root of defilements is ignorance and the teachings will work to dispel that.

I received many mails asking me to continue writing my blog, so today I just set my mind to write something. Whenever I post on my blog, I feel that I am actually directly communicating with you. Although some of you are far away, to me it feels like you are in front of me and thus I am talking to you and sharing my thoughts.

This month there are many nice programmes going on at KKBCS and the coming programmes such as Vesak day and Mother’s day are very important events. KKBCS is celebrating Mother’s day for the first time this year. Mother’s day is not part of Buddhist tradition but more a special day set aside by modern day society to remember the sacrifices of our mothers and thank them. However, I find it is a very special day to celebrate and remember the kindness of our mothers and pay tribute to them.

In the Buddhist view, everyone has been our mother in one way or another because for countless rebirths, most of us took rebirth from a mother’s womb (e.g when we are born as humans or animals). Basically, everyone has been our mother before. So we celebrate mother’s day as a kind of tribute to all those mothers who have cared so much for us. It is our gesture of acknowledging our mothers’ kindness and thank her.

I wish you Happy Vesak day and also Happy Mother’s day.

Dear Rinpoche

I wish to express my gratitude to Rinpoche for this year's mothers day celebration. This event have helped me heal my relationship with my mother and hopefully with my mothers and fathers of previous lives. Thank you for your patience, compassion, forgiveness and opportunities that Rinpoche had give me throughout these years. May I be able to repay your kindness through sincere service under your guidance.

With gratitude and warm regards

Dear Rinpoche-la and readers,

Indeed, it was a really very special and meaningful mother’s day for all who participated.

After a series of auspicious prayers and teachings, conducted for the commemoration of the Birth, Enlightenment and Mahaprainirvana of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, mother’s day was celebrated in a very warm and heart-touching way.

An excerpt from the 3rd Karmapa, Lord Rangjung Dorje, was chanted and recited to recollect the great kindness of mothers. It describes the selfless love and devoted tenderness that mother showers upon her beloved child. Once we had been conceived in her womb, from the very beginning of fetal stage till we were born and grown, our mothers, her entire heart and entire life have been completely dedicated to us, without any regrets. Our needs are her priority, our joy is her joy, our sadness is her sadness; our laughter and success are her happiness; our tears and failures are her sorrows and her world revolves around us, and we are her main reason and driving force for living.

Due to the sincere heart and compassion of Lord Rangjung Dorje, all hearts had been deeply touched. Those who were present during the chanting, their eyes were filled with tears of gratitude towards their mothers. With the blessing of Lord Rangjung Dorje and Rinpoche-la, we truly felt the greatness and kindness of our mothers, and heart wrenching pain when the description struck, reminding us that we have been ignoring our good fortunate and taking it as granted all along.

With the encouragement of bro – Alec, some of us hugged our mothers; some held their mothers’ hands; some just quietly but affectionately gazed at their mothers, with their sincere love which sprung from the depth of their hearts, as gestures of gratitude towards their mothers. I could see and feel that all mothers were overwhelmed with joy. It really touched my heart so much and felt that we had been entirely embraced in the heart warming atmosphere of great love.

Yeah, I completely agree with Rinpoche-la. Being Buddhists, we always pray and wish to develop our loving kindness and compassion towards all sentient beings, who were once our mothers during our wanderings in samsara, however, if we can’t even foster our gratitude and love towards our mother in this incarnation, whom we can truly feel her kindness, then there is no need to mention about other sentient beings. It will render all our prayers as mainly lip-service without meaning and essence.

Being indebted to the selfless love and tenderness of our kind mothers, we are now endowed with intelligence, good looks and strength. But just take a good look on our kind mothers, a stark contrast to us, after so much of the weariness and sacrifices in order to raise and nurture her child, she is now getting old, weak, clumsy and graceless. So, is this not the time for us to repay her kindness? On that day, I think many of us including myself, made good wishes and prayed that may all children be able to repay their mothers’ kindness. As well as, from that moment reciprocate their tender love and care to her, just as she had been showering on us all along.

So, from this very moment on, without any hesitation and delay, let us show our gratitude and love openly to all our kind mothers.

Besides, it was so nice to know that Ah-ma-yum was aware of the event. She called from Nepal and shared with us the joyous and meaningful moment. Actually, before that we were thinking how nice and wonderful if she could be present, and join us in this warm and touching event. Nevertheless, regardless of where she is, she is always in our hearts.

Ah-ma-yum is a wondrous mother. Without her perseverance and selfless devotion in taking care of Rinpoche-la devotedly and selflessly, we would not be able to enjoy the kind guidance of our compassionate Guru, as well as His great blessings now. Without Rinpoche-la’s compassionate and skilful guidance, we would still be shrouded in the darkness of ignorance, be immersed in the great ocean of negative activities which inevitably will bring forth terrific suffering when the karma ripens.

As such, thank you very much Ah-ma-yum for bestowing us such an exalted Lama. He is the beacon guiding those who are lost in the darkness of Samara; He is the stream of pure cooling nectar soothing those who burnt by the blazing fire of samsaric defilements; and He is the warm butter lamp that brightens and bring warmth to those who wanders lonely in the Samsara.

Ah-ma-yum, we sincerely pay homage to you!
May Ah-ma-yum and all mothers live long, enjoy good health and happiness always!
Just to share with you. Karmapa Khyenno!

Yours in the Dharma,
Qweelan
